Single-use support products: what are they, and how are they used?

Single-use support products, such as bioprocess containers, are valuable necessities in bioprocessing, especially in biopharmaceutical manufacturing.

Throughout our latest blog, we delve into the ins and outs of these products and how they’re used during research and bioproduction.

What are single-use support products?

As the name suggests, a single-use support product is anything that ‘supports’ your single-use bioprocessing equipment, such as your 3D media bags.

Support products typically refer to reusable items like bioprocess containers that house and protect your single-use laboratory gear during storage and shipping – we’ll be exploring more about these fantastic systems later on!

Why are single-use items used in the bioprocessing industry?

Single-use items are employed at various stages throughout bioprocessing across numerous industries such as the pharmaceutical, food production and biofuel sectors.

Disposable apparatus utilised by scientific researchers or biomanufacturers often includes:

  • Bioreactors – A sterile vessel where bioreactions take place and conditions can be controlled.
  • Silicone or TPE tubing – Transfers fluids from A to B throughout the different stages of bioprocessing.
  • Filters – Designed to remove cell debris from mixtures.
  • Media bags – Film bags that safely contain essential biofluids, such as buffers, liquid feed and sample collections.

While single-use products may not align with your sustainability goals, they’re essential in bioprocessing to ensure the safety and efficacy of medicines, foods and chemicals.

As they’re designed to be discarded after one application, you can trust that they’re sterile, helping to reduce the chance of cross-contamination between applications. This is essential as it increases your chances of gaining precise findings and producing effective and safe products

How can single-use items be reduced in bioprocessing for sustainability?

Although much of the equipment used in laboratory or manufacturing settings is single-use, you can still incorporate reusable single-use support apparatus into your operations.

This starts with reusable poly bioprocess containers, designed to be used again, and again and again. These outer packaging units hold the flexible film media bags required for sterile fluid handling throughout upstream and downstream processing. Accessories like Anti-Slosh, Foam, and Support Disk (for tubing) also help protect single-use bags and reduce customer waste output by preventing breaks, rips and tears in single-use bags.

Customisability

We can take any container design from our Genesis shipping selection or Cleanroom container range and customise it to meet your bag requirements. From bag port positioning to size and shape, we’ll work with you to find a fit that works for you.

Cleanliness

With smooth wall construction that prohibits bacterial growth and removable jet-washable panels, keeping contaminants away and your operations hygienic is easy.

Warehouse suitability

If you need to store your fluids in a warehouse facility ready for distribution, you can stack our units efficiently thanks to their stackable design and palletted bases.

Plus, thanks to their collapsible walls, they can be folded away for simple storage when not in use – how handy is that!

Recyclable design

After your reusable packaging container has reached the end of its long lifespan, it can be recycled by us and repurposed, reducing your company’s environmental impact! We have ISO 14001 certification, showing we have established ongoing processes to track and enhance our environmental practices. Additionally, we’re also EcoVadis Gold certified, meaning we are in the top 5% of companies worldwide in sustainability performance. So, you’ll be purchasing from an eco-friendly supplier.
