Thank cod it’s Fryday! Time for some lovely Grimsby fish and chips.
Here at ALLpaQ, we’re proud of our heritage. We started making our revolutionary all-plastic bioprocess containers when we were based in Grimsby. Since then, we’ve set sail from that famous trawler town and thrown our net around the whole bioprocessing world!
But nothing says home more than a plate of brilliantly fried Grimsby fish and chips!
After all, you can take the fabrication company out of Grimsby, but you can’t take Grimsby out of the fabrication company.
Today is National Fish and Chip Day! To us, that’s like Christmas Day, but you can keep your cranberry sauce, pass us the salt and vinegar!
Now, you might have been herring a lot about Grimsby recently – because, when it comes to fishing heritage, Grimsby’s haddock all going on! If you want great fish, it’s the plaice to go.
Okay, we’ll stop with the fishy puns.
Grimsby is of course world famous for its fish. At its peak, back in the 1950s, it was the largest and busiest fishing port in the world.
Grimsby’s Fishing Heritage Centre is a great museum, which depicts the terribly tough conditions the fishermen worked in, in the northern waters, but also makes plain the pride the town has in the bravery and industry of those generations of trawlermen who fed the nation. We think you should pay the museum a visit, we know you’ll be hooked.
Once, the fleets of trawlers crowded the docks so tightly, you could walk across the water without getting your feet wet. No more. Now, the commercial docks are far busier than the fishing docks. But, there is still a vibrant Grimsby Fish Market, which is doing a grand job of keeping the industry afloat.
Having been upgraded and brought into the 21st century, the modern market features new infrastructure including temperature control systems, cladding, hygiene control and new lighting.
This development is an act of faith and a show of confidence in the future of the fishing industry in Grimsby.
The phrase ‘Grimsby Fish’ still stands for freshness and great quality.
The Port of Grimsby is located on the south bank of the Humber Estuary, in North East Lincolnshire. Draw a line across the country from our present location in Widness, and you’re pretty much bang on. We didn’t stray far.
Across the water from Grimsby, you’ll find another great port – Kingston Upon Hull. Inevitably, there is a friendly rivalry between the two, with the Hulllensians typically referring to us as ‘Codheads’. One day the scales will fall from their eyes and they will realise the error of their ways. Because every Grimbarian knows – instinctively – that haddock is far better in batter than cod!
In closing, remember this: ALLpaQ remains proud of its great ties to Grimsby, and any fin is possible if you take your time and fillet well!
So, here’s to Papa’s and Steel’s Cornerhouse and Ocean Fish Bar and all the other champion chippies of Grimsby and Cleethorpes. Frying tonight!
Now, all this writing is making me hungry. Pass the salt and pepper …
