1% For The Planet is a movement that is committed to – and knowledgeable about – smart environmental giving and high-impact partnerships.
As a business ALLpaQ is committed to giving back as much as possible and we have always donated to projects and causes we feel passionate about. If you check out our social feeds, you’ll see that we donate to a different charity (as nominated by our staff) each month. We’ve always felt that, if we can help to make a difference, we should.
But, sometimes it is hard to know what the best choices are to affect the most change.
That’s why we have joined with the 1% for the Planet initiative. The main concept behind this is that “companies profit from the resources they take from the earth, they should protect those resources”.
Their philosophy is simple: they’re putting people and the planet over profit. Well, from our perspective and, it seems to us, any business perspective, there’s very little to argue with there; so we signed up!
1% for the Planet is a global movement that inspires businesses to support environmental solutions through the simple mechanism of donating 1% of their sales to tackle environmental issues. They advise on giving strategies, certify donations and amplify the impact of the network.
Rather like Business Declares – which ALLpaQ also enthusiastically supports – 1% for the Planet brings people and businesses together to increase smart environmental giving.
It all began in 2002 when Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies decided their businesses had a responsibility to protect the planet, so they decided to give 1% of their sales back to the environment – and thus was started a global movement.
As a business, giving back to the community and to the environment as much as we can, has always been integral to ALLpaQ’s ethos. As we have become more aware, over the last few years, of the urgency of the climate emergency, being able to make environmentally smart choices has become a top priority for us.
Being part of the 1% for the Planet institute allows us to give back to the most pressing environmental issues – so we can be sure that we are doing the most that a relatively small business like ourselves possibly can.
This year, we’ve been working closely with Green Small Business to develop an environmental action plan to meet the goals set out in our updated environmental policy. You can read more about that in our recent Net Zero article .
We have invested a lot into measuring our carbon footprint. This is all a process and whilst we will keep looking at how to reduce our impact, we also need to think more broadly than our own business parameters, especially as it will be almost impossible to completely remove our impact on the planet.
We will keep looking into how to make as many positive decisions as possible and beginning by investing some of our profits back into the protection of the earth feels like a good place to start.
Kirsten won’t tell you this, herself – so we thought we would:
In the National Business Women’s Awards, held at the Hilton, London Wembley on November the 18th – Kirsten won this year’s Social Impact Award
This is in recognition of all her achievements in embedding socially and environmentally responsible practices into everything we do at ALLpaQ. This requires enthusiastic support from the entire ALLteaM – and it’s certainly a team effort – but the vision comes from Kirsten and her commitment to the environment, to global change and to empowering women in a traditionally male business sector. Congrats, Kirsten!
